Pre-departure homework assignment

I. French “culture” assignment. For this first part of your homework, each person must look up information on her/his topic (in your group) and write a one or two PARAGRAPH description of the name or phrase your group was given. You'll then bring that paragraph to class where you will work with your group for five minutes before a representative from your group presents your topic to the class as a whole. In cases where the topic is a place, you must also give the directions of how to arrive there by the metro from the FIAP where we'll be staying (Remember, our Metro stop is Glacière on line 6). For example, if your topic is, "the Eiffel Tower", you must each research (on the web is fine, no bibliographies needed), information on the Eiffel Tower, for example, why & when was it built, what is significant about it historically, its place in modern society....etc.
** When you present to the class, your presentation will only be 3-5 min total**

The class has been divided up into 8 groups, and you will find your name below. The topic for your group is the topic you must explore and explain to the entire class. Collectively, we will be exploring Historical, Architectural, Political, and Social aspects of French culture.

II. American Cultural Values

The second part of your homework is to read about the 13 Cultural Categories listed in the Peace Corps training manual at:
http://www.peacecorps.gov/wws/publications/culture/pdf/chapter2.pdf . Note, you only have to read the pages 44-50, (section 2.3), on the 13 cultural values.
You can also first click on: http://www.peacecorps.gov/wws/publications/culture/, and then click on the link for "American Culture and American Diversity ".
There is no written requirement for this part of the homework. We will discuss these values in class.
